SAN FRANCISCO -- Baseball, as you may have heard somewhere, is a funny game.

That's near the top of the list of cliches in the sport, but that's only because it's true. The more you try to predict, the more you try to get ahead of yourself, the game will slap you and knock you back into your seat and tell you to be patient.

If you had already started planning the National League playoff field, you're going to have to wait.

At least one more day. Maybe two. Maybe even three or four.

Turning a quick 180 on the significant recent trends of both teams, the Padres slugged their way to a 6-4 victory over the Giants on Friday, sending 42,409 orange-clad, towel-waving fans quietly into the streets of San Francisco, dressed for a party that was postponed.
