INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Mo Williams was doing his interview at the Cleveland Cavaliers media day Monday when someone addressed him as "LeBron.""What?" Williams said with a laugh. He later looked at the assembled media masses and proclaimed: "There's no LeBron in this building. Whether we believe it or not, he's not coming back."
So it is with the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers. The team's superstar, the reigning two-time MVP, the guy who carried the franchise ... he's taken his talents to Miami ... err ... South Beach. And the Cavs have "turned the corner" and "moved on." That was the constant message from players and administration Monday. Players got that message, and they did their best to stay on point all afternoon.
But if any player on the Cavs was emblematic of the team and city's feelings about "The Decision," it was Williams. In July he put an emotional response on Twitter the night James announced his decision on that ridiculous TV show. Just recently Williams was quoted on Yahoo! saying the personal and professional events of the summer caused him to lose some love for the game and even prompted him to ponder retiring.
The retirement talk prompted questions about Williams' inner core, with some observers wondering whether he was a strong enough personality to handle the disappointment of James' departure. Coach Byron Scott said he had a 45-minute conversation with Williams, who clarified his feelings.
