BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox have honored retiring infielder Mike Lowell during a pregame ceremony. The 20-minute tribute took place near third base before Saturday's opener of a day-night doubleheader against the New York Yankees.
The 2007 World Series MVP played third for most of his 13-year career but spent most of his time at first base this season because of a hip ailment. He played sparingly until Kevin Youkilis was lost for the season with a thumb injury on Aug. 2.
During the ceremony, pitcher Josh Beckett, who came to Boston from Florida with Lowell in a trade before the 2006 season, gave him the third-base bag.
Lowell has said he will retire after this season, which ends Sunday against the Yankees.
