Not because he doesn't want to play for the Ducks, the forward said on a conference call with reporters on Tuesday. He just wanted to make sure other key members of the team, namely Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, would be there with him.
After protracted negotiations, Ryan finally agreed to a five-year deal reportedly worth $25.5 million, though he'd initially planned only on a three-year commitment.
"I understand why (Anaheim) didn't want to do that," Ryan said. "They have some players coming up then and they want me to hold down the fort."
That's kind of what Ryan was afraid of, though -- being the lone holdover. And the Ducks stuck to the five-year plan, just as they had with Getzlaf and Perry, who are both signed through 2013. To sweeten things, an extra half-mil was added onto an earlier proposal to get to the final figure.
The key, though, really was Getzlaf and Perry, Ryan's linemates.
