Filed under: Giants, NFC EastKevin Boss is no Jeremy Shockey, the four-time Pro Bowl tight end he succeeded in New York, nor a Mark Bavaro, who caught the most passes of any Giant during the team's 1986 and 1990 championship seasons. But the 26-year-old Boss has been a reliable safety valve for Eli Manning since he replaced the injured Shockey as the starter in December 2007.
That status is in jeopardy now that Boss is dealing with effects of his third concussion in three years, one that will sideline him for at least this week's game at Indianapolis. Second-year tight end Travis Beckum will make his third career start in place of Boss, whose three concussions Giants coach Tom Coughlin termed "a major concern." Bear Pascoe, promoted from the practice squad, will back up Beckum.
Boss has had headaches since being slammed by airborne Carolina safety Sherrod Martin during the first quarter of New York's 31-18 opening victory but he's "pretty certain" that he'll return for the Sept. 26 game against Tennessee.
