Filed under: Flames, NHL RumorsAt a quick glance, it might be easy to say the best moves the Calgary Flames made in the off-season were re-acquiring Olli Jokinen and Alex Tanguay.
But in reality, the best acquisition general manager Darryl Sutter made over the summer was hiring Jay Feaster as his assistant GM.
Feaster won a Stanley Cup as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lighting in 2004 and he clearly knows what it takes to build a contending team. He lost his job with the Lightning when the team was sold.
The Lightning, you may remember, beat Sutter's Flames in a seven-game thriller of a series in the 2004 Cup Final, and that's the last time Calgary enjoyed any semblance of playoff success. They've since missed the post-season the last two years and have not made it past the first round three other times.
Sutter was criticized for insulating himself in Calgary's front office and Feaster will now be his sounding board and maybe bring some calm (and a little sanity) to the storm.
Consider the deal last January when Sutter sent Dion Phaneuf and two prospects to Toronto for Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and Ian White. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
