Bucs' Defensive Wrinkle Slows Panthers

Filed under: Buccaneers, Panthers, NFC SouthCHARLOTTE -- Tanard Jackson, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' free safety, is a shrimp. He came out of the shower Sunday afternoon, skin and bones, and looked like he weighed 180 pounds.

"185," Jackson said.

Ok, 185. He is still probably the lightest free safety in the NFL. It looked a little odd for a free safety to come up in the tackle box and try and deal with the Carolina Panthers' vaunted run game, but there was Jackson getting hunted by tackles.

"It's a mentality," Jackson said.

Jackson came into the box a few times in the first half, but it was a full-time adjustment in the third quarter. The Panthers (0-2) rushed for 38 yards in the second half and they could not rescue their beleaguered quarterback Matt Moore, who was 6 of 16 for 125 yards and Tampa (2-0) won 20-7.
